In 1922, the Treaty of Rapallo was signed by Imperial Germany and Tsarist Russia re-establishing diplomatic relations between Berlin and Moscow. After the Second Franco-Prussian war, it was absolutely clear that the Triple Entente binding Russia, France and Great Britain was finished. Recognising that the window of opportunity to defeat Russia had now passed, the House of Hohenzollern cut their loses, and allied with Russia, in effect restarting Bismarck's Re-insurance Treaty of 1887. It was a smart move for both sides, and effectively gifting the hegemony of Western Europe to the Prussians.Element: Story_Chunk_2 row: 1062 index: 1

In 1951, MacArthur hears the Doctor #1 ask “Will there be any improvement before he dies?”. “Its not inconceivable that he could experience a lucid moment or two during the interim. I've seen it before”. MacArthur had not had too many lucid moments since the Korean War had become. Most recently, he had sought to deploy the bacteriological weapons that Unit 731 surrendered to him in 1945. This illegal handover had secured the amnesty of the Japanese scientists against trial for the extermination of 200,000 Chinese citizens during World War II. Absolutely not, Truman had said.

Sealed Train | In 1917, a sealed train arrives at the Finland Station in Petrograd. Railwork workers find a macabre scene inside Locomotive #293. Lenin realized that he must return to Russia as soon as possible, but this was problematic because he was isolated in neutral Switzerland as the First World War raged throughout neighboring states. The Swiss communist Fritz Platten nonetheless managed to negotiate with the German government for Lenin and his company to travel through Germany by rail, on the so-called "sealed train". The German government clearly hoped Lenin's return would create political unrest back in Russia, which would help to end the war on the Eastern front, allowing Germany to concentrate on defeating the Western allies. Once through Germany, Lenin continued by ferry to Sweden; the remainder of the journey through Scandinavia was subsequently arranged by Swedish communists Otto Grimlund and Ture Nerman. On April 16, 1917, Lenin arrived by train to a tumultuous reception at Finland Station, in Petrograd, described by American journalist Stephen King (the author of "Reds"). |
