Imperial LanceJune 9th 1940 Britain and Japan come to terms ~ Negotiations progressed rapidly from that day, although the initial Japanese demands were simply too much to accept quickly. Unfortunately, from England’s point of view, there was little need for concessions from the Japanese side. The German war machine served as Japan’s best negotiator. The gambit of launching the Imperial Fleet during negotiations was brilliant. Not only did it safely put the Japanese fleet beyond the reach of the Emperor’s internal foes, it was an irresistible siren call to England. Accept the treaty and the fleet would continue its journey. Reject the treaty and face possible defeat, perhaps annihilation.
